{"id":879,"date":"2019-02-07T17:39:38","date_gmt":"2019-02-07T17:39:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.uthscsa.edu\/lsom-urology\/?page_id=879"},"modified":"2019-02-07T17:39:38","modified_gmt":"2019-02-07T17:39:38","slug":"percutaneous-nephrolithotomy-pnl","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/lsom.uthscsa.edu\/urology\/patient-care\/our-services\/comprehensive-kidney-stone-center\/percutaneous-nephrolithotomy-pnl\/","title":{"rendered":"Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PNL)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Percutaneous nephrolithotomy is a minimally-invasive procedure in which a small scope is placed through the back into the kidney.<\/p>\n<p>The kidney stones are then broken up with a combination ultrasound and pneumatic probe or laser and extracted through the back.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the procedure, a drainage tube (nephrostomy) is left in the kidney to drain the kidney in case blockage of urine flow due to stone fragments, blood clot, or swelling of the ureter occurs.<\/p>\n<p>The ideal patient for percutaneous nephrolithotomy is someone with a large stone (&gt; 2 cm in diameter) for which shock wave lithotripsy and ureteroscopy have low treatment success rates.<\/p>\n<p>The procedure is considered an outpatient procedure but patients are observed overnight.
