Clinical Trials

An Explanation of Clinical Trials from the National Cancer Institute

Understanding clinical trials

Investigator Initiated Clinical Trials

Some protocols are developed “in house” by the UT Health San Antonio faculty. These protocols are often “translational” approaches which bring new developments from our basic science laboratories directly into the clinic.

Collaborative Group Trials

Our physicians are members of multi-institutional “collaborative groups” that offer protocols on a national scale. Specifically, we are active in the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG), Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG), National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP), Children’s Oncology Group (COG), and the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group (ACOSOG).

Sponsored Clinical Trials

Some protocols are collaborations with industry to test new medical devices and pharmaceutical agents. In some cases we are not permitted to list information about sponsored trials on our website. Please contact the Cancer Information Line at (800) 340-2872 for information about additional protocols that are available to our patients.
