Neurocritical Academic Programs
Neurocritical Care
Neurocritical care is a specialty that provides care for patients with severe neurological injury or illness. UT Health San Antonio offers a multidisciplinary approach to patient care with a team comprised of board-certified and specialty-trained neurocritical care physicians, advanced practice providers, and specialized critical care pharmacists, respiratory therapists, and nurses. We work directly with our neurosurgeons and neurologists to provide the highest level of expertise in accordance with the most up-to-date guidelines and therapies for patients suffering from life-threatening neurologic conditions. Our state-of-the-art neuro ICU is an 18-bed unit under the Department of Neurosurgery and is the only academic neurocritical care division in greater south Texas.
Our current team consists of two full-time board-certified neuro intensivists, residents (Emergency Medicine, Neurosurgery and Neurology), fellows (Neuro C.C, Pulmo C.C, and Trauma C.C ), five mid-level providers, and a Neuro Pharmacist. Our program offers a two-year UCNS neurocritical care as well as a One-year CAST neurocritical care fellowship.
We are an academic institution with a Level 1 Trauma Center and Comprehensive Stroke designations. The neuro ICU has the support of a dedicated neuro pharmacist, multimodal monitoring of intracranial pressure, cerebral oxygenation, continuous electroencephalography, advanced hemodynamic monitoring a portable CT scanner, and outstanding supporting staff. This is a closed neuro ICU and neurocritical care is the primary service for patients in our unit. We also provide consultative services for patients throughout the hospital. Our division is actively conducting research in the latest diagnostic and therapeutic targets in traumatic brain injury, stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and seizures, including participation in national multi-center clinical trials.
