Program description
This sports medicine fellowship provides an extensive, well-balanced surgical and clinical experience in all aspects of orthopaedic sports medicine. Throughout the clinical experience, the Fellow will work closely with orthopaedic and primary care sports medicine physicians, athletic trainers, and physical therapists. Medical coverage includes office and sideline management of local professional and collegiate athletes, numerous area high schools, as well as amateur and weekend warriors. The surgical experience is significant and includes both arthroscopic and open procedures of the upper and lower extremity. Recent operative experience has averaged 782 surgical cases. Like most programs, the knee is the most frequently operated joint followed by the shoulder. Hip and elbow are also included, with options for additional experience in hand or foot surgery. The experience runs the gamut between primary and complex revisions, with advanced cartilage procedures, meniscus transplants, multi-ligament reconstruction, osteotomies and some knee and shoulder arthroplasty. A unique feature of this program includes a longitudinal experience with each of the four core faculty. The fellow’s schedule is flexible enough to maximize the learning of each individual fellow.
Didactic conferences include grand rounds, journal club and focused topics from DeLee & Drez Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, and radiology. Sideline coverage includes professional experience with the Spurs, Division I college with UTSA, coverage of the Alamo Bowl, local high school football, and other local events. The overall experience is primarily clinical. There are auxiliary personnel and resources available to meet the board requirement that each fellow will produce at least one project suitable for publication.
This fellowship participates in the match program and is ACGME accredited.
