Personal Statement:
Dr. Peter Fox, earned his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine, interned at the Duke University School of Medicine and completed his residency and fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis. He was a senior staff scientist at Johns Hopkins University’s Mind/Brain Institute before joining the Health Science Center in 1991 to create the RIC. He has appointments in radiology, neurology, psychiatry and physiology.
Under Dr. Fox’s leadership, the Research Imaging Center has amassed one of the world’s largest arrays of imaging equipment for research with animals. New faculty recruits praise the RIC and name it as a factor in accepting a position here. Established scientists throughout Texas, impressed by the facility’s capabilities and the faculty’s expertise, have conducted joint research studies. Collaborators from as far away as Hong Kong and Beijing have come to the RIC to carry out imaging research.
The center is one of the few in the U.S. that enables researchers to study multiple species of animals with multiple types of systems, including functional and anatomical MRI, and positron-emission tomography (PET). A state-of-the-art animal facility is located within the building to eliminate the stress on the animals of being transported from other buildings.

“Image-guided, Robotically Delivered Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (irTMS) Treatment for Combat-Related PTSD: a Double-Blind, Randomized Comparison to Sham TMS”
This study is a collaboration between UTHSCSA — the host institution of the Consortium to Alleviate PTSD (CAP) and the development site of the UTHSCSA irTMS system — and the Laurel Ridge Treatment Center (LRTC), San Antonio, Texas, the largest civilian provider of psychiatric care to the United States military. LRTC treats more than 300 active-duty personnel for PTSD per year. The proposed study, applying a novel TMS-delivery system in an active-duty population could only be performed as a collaboration between these two sites. In preparation for this trial, UTHSCSA and LRTC have executed a royalty-free, license for access to an irTMS system and the related intellectual property.

Womb to Tomb: Developmental Programming-Aging Interactions in Primates – Project 1
This is an integrated multicomponent U19 project, designed to investigate the role that developmental programming plays on the aging process in nonhuman primates (NHP). It shall study the impact of aging on NHP brain, behavior, hippocampal-hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HHPA) axis, cardiovascular systems (CVS), and metabolism throughout the life course of the animals. Due to the anatomical and physiological similarities in aging, the baboon will be the NHP model used to research the impact of different developmental programming interventions, such as modified maternal dietary intake and cortical replacement.

Characterization of Acute Pediatric Anoxic Brain Injury in Non-fatal Drowning Using MRI
The overall goal of this proposal is to validate and refine candidate imaging markers of acute-phase drowning-induced pediatric anoxic brain injury (ABI) using structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Although the pathophysiology of acute pediatric ABI is not well described, our focus on spatially convergent structural imaging findings are motivated by several observations. Therefore, the results from our study would have implications for management of ABI that extend beyond non- fatal drowning.

“Image-guided, Robotic TMS: Aiming Validations, Optimizations and Extensions”
The overarching goals of this R01 are to enhance the spatial precision, clinical efficacy, and user operability of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) through model-based, image-guided treatment planning and robotic-aided delivery, termed IR-TMS. TMS is FDA approved for treating major depressive disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder and for preoperative functional brain mapping. Cardinal shortcomings of TMS as applied clinically are: 1) targeting is uninformed by per-subject neuroanatomy, neurophysiology or connectomics; 2) delivery systems lack the spatial precision needed to support personalized targeting; and, 3) manual positioning is time consuming and intrinsically inaccurate. The solution proposed is to validate and extend the capabilities of IR-TMS.
