The fellow will spend his/her time between 3 institutions: Audie L. Murphy VAH, University Hospital and Saint Luke’s Baptist.
The VAH is a wonderful opportunity for any graduate medical program, but for vascular surgery it is outstanding. It is such a great honor to care for those who have served. The fellow will spend the first 6 months in a mentored setting with both operative, clinic and ward responsibilities. He/she will also have protected time to work in the vascular lab. This will be in preparation for the mandatory RPVI exam.
The next 9 months will be at University Hospital (UHS)– a 700 bed facility with a dedicated hybrid suite and IAC accredited vascular laboratory. It serves Bexar County hospital district and is also the regional Level 1 trauma hospital. UHS offers experience with complex aortic trauma as well a population of patients with advanced complications of diabetes. The fellow will also begin the framework for the research/outcome project required for graduation.
In the mid portion of the second year, the fellow will complete a 3 month rotation with Dr. Toursarkissian at Saint Luke’s Baptist (SLB). This is an extremely busy “private practice” style rotation with a gifted teacher. It is a wonderful one-on-one experience.
The fellow will finish the second year back at the VAH, but this time will be offered more autonomy with independent clinics and more decision making responsibilities. He/she will also complete and present the research topic in the area that they have chosen.
