Catherine Morris, MD
Assistant Professor
Department of Medicine
Nomination Submission:
Every patient is important. Every minute of work we do is about a person – not a diagnosis, medical record number, or metric. Dr. Morris strives to impart this tenet to her learners because almost all of us will need the medical system at some point in our lives. She teaches her learners that we need to create a system that is there for everyone, the way that we would want it to be there for us. If we do not actively foster that system, it will not exist. As physicians, we are worthy to serve those less fortunate, and we must always be vigilant to achieve the best for our patients. Dr. Morris teaches her residents about compassion, empathy, and advocacy by providing a voice for those unable to or afraid to speak. Dr. Morris went into medicine thinking of how she might be able to help those in need, however, her purpose has broadened. In addition to treating patients and alleviating their symptoms, Dr. Morris teaches her learners to listen. Listen beyond the chief complaint, the review of systems, and past medical history. She teaches “be your patient’s advocate.” If she can communicate this broader purpose to those she teaches and inspire others to pursue this mission, it will have a lasting and renewing impact. Maybe she can help others who she will never meet. Dr. Morris wants to inspire her medical students and residents to reach higher and provide great patient care. This kind of teaching and learning will ensure a better future.
