2022 Fall STAR Educator Recipient: Anil K. Dutta, MD

Anil K Dutta, MDAnil K. Dutta, MD

Associate Professor
Department of Orthopaedics, Texas Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Fellowship Instructor

Nomination Submission:

Dr. Dutta has served as a pillar for compassionate mentorship and surgical teaching. Almost any of the medical students or residents coming to the program will tell you how his teaching skills, patience, engagement in research, and general interest in people has changed their lives. He has been nominated as teacher of the year for multiple years.

Dr. Dutta has a very unique teaching style for surgery through his depth of knowledge in the shoulder and elbow, awareness of literature, and surgical skills. He has mastered the art of walking a resident through a surgery, never belittling a student, and has an endless reserve of patience. For example, To help residence learn how to do a complicated surgery of scoping an elbow, he first Showed a lecture on how to do the steps of an elbow scope, this was then followed by a cadaveric lab that was set up specifically focusing on those skills where he individually went through the steps. This was to prepare the residents for an upcoming case doing the same procedure.

As a young faculty, he will frequently come and check on my progress and somehow finds the time to provide mentorship. It’s been an absolute privilege to have trained with Dr. Dutta and I hope to highlight the value he brings to surgical training.
