Department of Medicine, Director of Cardio-Oncology / Collaborative Cardiology Research Program

Nomination Submission:

Dr. Eric Yang (Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging) and Dr. Prince Otchere (Director, Cardio-Oncology) have co-developed a Collaborative Cardiology Research Program for Trainees with Fellow, Resident, and Medical Student Trainee Leaders for implementation in the 2022-2023 AY. The mission of the program is to create a sustainable, effective, efficient framework to produce research in the field of cardiology at UTHSA by connecting students, residents and fellows to Cardiology Faculty Mentors. The goals: (1) Provide guidance to conduct clinical and epidemiologic research; (2) Connect trainees with research mentors in cardiology based on interests; (3) Help with formulating research plan; (4) Learn how to derive excellent research questions; (5) Publish an abstract/manuscript within a specific timeframe aiming for National conferences. The cohorts: Interventional Cardiology; Structural Heart Disease; Cardio-Oncology; Heart Failure; Health Outcomes; Quality Improvement; Nuclear Cardiology; ECHO/Non-invasive Cardiology. Drs. Otchere & Yang have only been with UTHSCSA/Division of Cardiology for a short time and are already making great strides in elevating our department/division profile. I strongly believe that they meet the above criterion for the LSOM Stars of Education Award.
