Liver Transplant Fellowship

The Department of Anesthesiology provides a one-year, non-ACGME accredited fellowship in liver transplant anesthesiology.  It is designed to enable the fellow to acquire the knowledge and skills to effectively care for patients undergoing liver transplantation and with end-stage liver disease.  We perform approximately 120 adult liver transplants per year with about 45 being living-donor liver transplants.

As part of intraoperative management, the fellow will be exposed to transesophageal echocardiography, continuous renal replacement therapy, veno-venous bypass, and viscoelastic testing.  In addition to intraoperative management, the fellow will gain experience in all aspects of the patient’s care including preoperative evaluation, consultation, and listing, as well as postoperative care in the ICU.  There is also exposure to quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.  There will be an emphasis on the management of living donor transplantation donors and recipients.

Rotations will include experience in the blood bank with transfusion medicine, the transplant ICU, transesophageal echocardiography and point of care ultrasound, and the hepatology clinic.  Since the fellowship is not ACGME accredited, when not working in transplant cases the fellow will be supervising cases as faculty and will be compensated as such.

Our program will be participating in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and National Residency Match Program (NRMP) for the 2023-2024 fellowship class. Our interview processes will follow national safety guidelines.
