Cardiothoracic Surgery

Carolyn Dubeau, MD

PGY I

Personal Statement:

Dr. Dubeau is thrilled to train at UT Health San Antonio during such an exciting time for cardiothoracic surgery. She was captivated by cardiac physiology as a college student, while learning the complexities of the cardiac cycle in General Physiology. “My professor and mentor who taught me the cardiac cycle for the first time explained the system with such beautiful depth; it illustrated harmony between the electrical and mechanical functions of the heart. It inspired my research and extracurricular activities as a medical student. I can’t believe that I get to study and operate on the heart for the rest of my life”. She is interested in cardiac surgery, particularly valvular heart disease, and enjoys surgical valve repair/replacement, as well as transcatheter aortic valve replacements (TAVR).

Dr. Dubeau has traveled across the U.S. and back in pursuit of her education and has enjoyed exploring various regions throughout. As a native of Southern California, she grew up in Orange County, CA and loves to be outdoors. She attended college in South Bend, IN at Saint Mary’s College, an all-women’s college, where she discovered with zeal the importance of supporting women in science. “Without having attended Saint Mary’s, I’m not certain that I would have pursued science or medicine in college. Strong female mentorship in Biology as well as a faculty committed to seeing us succeed made all the difference for me. It changed the course of my career”!

Dr. Dubeau took a leap of faith traveling to North Haven, CT to attend the Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine, Quinnipiac University. She is proud to be a part of the fourth class of students at Netter, bringing their new medical school to its full size. Throughout her time at Netter she enjoyed working with faculty on curricular design for the clinical arts and sciences and studying the process of medical education. She took this love beyond the medical school to middle school students in New Haven, CT and lead the Science Friday Program, providing monthly science enrichment to disadvantaged students.

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons and Women in Thoracic Surgery organizations were imperative in Dr. Dubeau’s decision to wholeheartedly pursue an integrated route to training in CT surgery. “Receiving the STS Looking to the Future Scholarship, followed by the WTS Brigid Scanlan Traveling Mentorship award gave me the opportunity to meet many incredible surgeons and residents in this field. Learning from Dr. Carpenter throughout my WTS award confirmed all of my interests in heart surgery and education”.

Dr. Dubeau is currently a PGY-1 Integrated Cardiothoracic Surgery Resident at UT Health San Antonio, Long School of Medicine. She is interested in educational methods in cardiothoracic surgery and plans to practice academic medicine following residency. Her other academic interests include the use of media in medicine; she is the creator and producer of the podcast, “Essential Wisdom: Inspiring Future Female Physicians”, a podcast for women interested in pursuing a career in medicine. “It’s essential that young women are supported for their interest in medicine, learning and being inspired by those who have laid the foundation before us, as well as becoming adequately informed about the process and experience of training and practicing in various specialties”. Dr. Dubeau is an avid runner, cyclist, and musician.
