Patient Care

The Texas Diabetes Institute is the largest clinical center in the world devoted primarily to the care of patients with T2DM. The 153,000 sq ft institute represents the largest, most sophisticated diabetes center in the world providing state-of-the-art care for patients with type 2 and type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM and T2DM). Ms. Teresa DeLaHaya, RN, M.P.H serves as Vice President of the Texas Diabetes Institute and Dr. Ralph DeFronzo serves as Deputy Director of the Texas Diabetes Institute.

Dr. Kathy LaCivita, Professor of Medicine at the UTHSA, is the Medical Director of the TDI, which cares for approximately 8,000 diabetic patients annually. Members of the Ophthalmology and Podiatry Departments are housed within the TDI and Cardiology and Nephrology faculty members staff consultation clinics at the TDI. Certified diabetes educators and dieticians provide expert diabetes education and participate in our ADA-certified patient education program. A fully equipped gym with two full time exercise therapists is present on site.
