Pediatric Emergency Medicine
The Pediatric Emergency Medicine section was started in August 2016 and is the physician practice that staffs Children’s Emergency Department (ED) at University Hospital in San Antonio. The Department is a component of the hospital’s Pediatric Level I Trauma certification.
Our faculty are Board-Certified Pediatric Emergency Medicine Physicians and Board-Certified Emergency Medicine Physicians. The unit is staffed with pediatric emergency nurses. As part of a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, our providers collaborate and consult with myriad pediatric specialties.
The Pediatric Emergency Department operates 24 hours, 7 days a week. The new state of the art ED consists of 16 rooms including a 2-bed resuscitation suite which is equipped with bedside Ultrasound, Video Assisted Airway equipment, and an assortment of other medical devices and equipment for the use in Pediatric medical and trauma resuscitation and neonatal resuscitation. There is also a 2-bed procedure and sedation suite equipped for Orthopedic, Wound Care, and other procedures requiring the use of procedural sedation.
Emergency Medicine, Pediatric, Medicine, and Family Medicine residents have the opportunity to rotate through the Pediatric Emergency Department. Third and fourth year residents will also rotate through the department. A Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship is in the development stages.
