Why Emergency Medicine?

I think in medical school, the my rotations with other specialties didn’t hold my attention very well. I wanted far more variety and excitement. I love the fast pace and variability of high and low acuity. I enjoy seeing a problem and being able to fix it without delay. There is a sense of pleasure and deep satisfaction seeing a chaotic resuscitation bay with a crashing patient immediately calm when the seasoned emergency physician takes charge.  At the same time, I get the pleasure–and often the challenge–of interacting with a myriad of patients and counseling them or simply reassuring them. And when my shift is done, I don’t have to take any of my work home. So after all that, why wouldn’t I choose Emergency Medicine?

Why did you choose UT Health?

I’m a military-sponsored resident. I wanted to establish myself in a place where I could very well be stationed either immediately after residency or later in my career. I also love we have the academic institution behind us, with every specialty you can think of. Have a question? Just ask the expert on service. And concomitantly have the acuity and patient population of a community hospital. The marriage of seemingly two opposite environments lends itself to a unique learning experience. I don’t doubt even after residency there will be a mountain of information and patient cases I have yet to learn or experience. However, I know full well after I graduate, I will have amassed an array of tools and clinical skills at least to know where to start and how to find the answer.
