Why Emergency Medicine?

I chose emergency medicine because we are the only specialty that collectively never turns any patient away. We treat the entire spectrum: neonates, infants, teens, adults, geriatrics, and pregnant women. We get to do this while focusing on emergent illnesses and injuries. This allows us to make a huge immediate impact while allowing growth in primary care, critical care, and procedural acumen.

Why did you choose UT Health?

Aside from the high acuity county hospital setting, I chose UT Health San Antonio because, in the age of Zoom, it was by far the program that appeared to have the tightest knit. This program really values wellness and class bonding. They put their money where their mouth is by funding yearly retreats, monthly social stipends with protected time off, and yearly national conferences, on top of the random program sponsored socials we frequently have.   As someone native to south Texas, the second reason I chose this program is because of the close proximity to family and to my hispanic community.  Finally, the third big reason is that I appreciate the cost of living of SA. After 5 years, my pug is finally able to have her own yard, all while living 9 minutes away from work.
