Why Emergency Medicine?
I was one of those who was heart-set on it from the beginning. I scribed for a year before medical school and my first case as a scribe was a traumatic thumb amputation. I remember thinking “this is it. This is what I want to do with the rest of my life.” I love being able to offer immediate interventions that make huge differences, and I get tons of satisfaction out of knowing that if things hit the fan, I know how to help. At the same time, I love the little daily interactions with patients where all I’m doing is offering reassurance and it’s enough. EM was the reason that I went to medical school, and I love it even more now that I did back then.
Why did you choose UT Health?
I have always loved the people here- from my first interaction with the residents as a student, I realized that they were not just colleagues but friends. On that note, their interaction with faculty was also super cordial and friendly even though they clearly respected them very highly. But the program was also super unique in that it offered tracks for fellowship that I could pursue during residency, and it had a huge Hispanic population (being fluent in medical Spanish was super important to me). It was my top choice program, and I am so grateful to have wound up here.
