Overview:

Hypnotic Agents Are Effective for Insomnia but at the Expense of Adverse Events
Christopher Alcorta, MD

Insomnia is a common outpatient chief complaint that is associated with comorbid medical conditions, mental health disorders, and financial burden. First line nonpharmacological interventions are well studied. However data regarding pharmacological management is limited for acute and long term treatment duration with few comparisons between available hypnotic agents. This meta-analysis seeks to estimate the comparative effectiveness of licensed and non-licensed pharmacological treatments for the acute and long-term treatment of adults with insomnia disorder. This current data can be used to guide shared decision making between patients and clinicians regarding pharmacological management of insomnia.

At the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to:

·       Summarize current guidelines for management of insomnia disorder

·       Analyze recent meta-analysis data regarding efficacy, acceptability, tolerability, and safety of several hypnotic agents

·       Apply data to clinical practice in selecting appropriate pharmacological treatment for insomnia in adults
