Message from the chair
Our department embraces our motto “inventing a healthier future for families and communities in San Antonio, South Texas and beyond.”
We are a large and diverse academic department committed to providing accessible, comprehensive, high quality and personal health care at several sites in San Antonio. Our family physicians provide medical care for the entire life-span: prenatal care, children, and adolescent care, adult and elderly care. We take seriously our academic responsibility to generate new knowledge that will help build models of high-performance organizations, including the Patient-Centered Medical Home. Our physician-researchers are conducting national and regional experiments at the cutting edge of understanding how to build these medical homes. Therefore, our physicians, patients, and clinic staff partners benefit from a short cycle from evidence-based innovation to implementation.
We have an outstanding residency program that benefits from close collaboration and support from our colleagues in our academic medical center. We pride ourselves in our ability to optimize digital resources to support a learning environment that supports the development of the next generation of Family Medicine leaders from among our residents. Members of our faculty are recognized national and international leaders in practice-advocacy, education and research; faculty members hold leadership positions in the Society of Teachers in Family Medicine, the American Geriatric Society, the North American Primary Care Research Group, and the American Academy of Family Physicians. Several of our faculty members have received Presidential Awards for Excellence in Teaching and Clinical Care.
On a personal note, I am passionate about promoting health including physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual health. I am grounded in the belief of the inalienable dignity of each person. My life experience has taught me the power of community wisdom and collaboration. I believe that as family physicians we are in a unique position to bridge Public Health and clinical practice. I want to learn how to build joyful, patient-centered medical homes and to promote community coalitions that transform our culture and environment to support health. My background as an epidemiologist, primary care researcher, and practicing family physician gets me started, the support of our department’s excellent faculty, staff, residents and students makes it possible.
