Overview:

Adding Puffs of Steroid Inhaler to Rescue Inhaler in Moderate to Severe Asthma
Armando Flores, MD

While African American and Hispanic populations with asthma have higher rates of ED visits and hospitalizations, there is not much recent research focusing on these populations. One recent study aiming to decrease asthma exacerbations in moderate to severe asthma found a potential alternative option to SMART therapy, which may not always be an option. This alternative, adding puffs of ICS to SABA when as needed reliever is needed, shows promising option to prevent asthma exacerbations. As providers, remaining open to all options for moderate to severe asthma will increase our chances of maximizing control of asthma in our patients.

After this presentation attendees will be able to:

1. Recognize lack of data for asthma treatment in minority populations.

2. Distinguish when SMART vs alternative method is needed for asthma.

3. Outline findings from study of interest.

4. Prepare to use alternative methods for asthma control

Albuterol-Budesonide Fixed-Dose Combination Rescue Inhaler for Asthma
