Double the Trouble, Double the Fun: Treatment Approach for Double Diabetes

Overview:

There is a growing proportion of T1DM patients that possess clinical features of T2DM, a subgroup known as ‘double diabetes (DD)’, that is associated with an increased risk of metabolic complications. This disease state is unrecognized by current guidelines and minimal literature exists regarding the use of T2DM agents that are known to provide metabolic and vascular benefit. DD is intermittently seen in practice, so it would be of benefit to familiarize healthcare providers with the existing evidence to support clinical decision making regarding the use of adjunct noninsulin antidiabetic agents in DD.

Objectives:

1.  Describe the pathogenesis of double diabetes.
2.  Evaluate the available literature regarding the efficacy and safety of noninsulin antidiabetic agents in type 1 diabetes (T1DM) with clinical features of type 2 diabetes (T2DM).
3.  Formulate the most appropriate evidence-based treatment approach for a patient diagnosed with double diabetes
