Overview:

Physical Activity is an important component in the management of patients with obesity, improve outcomes of chronic medical problems and improve health and wellbeing. There are several factors that prevent patients from exercising including physical restriction, lack of information and resources, lack of time and motivation as well as physicians’ discomfort and lack of knowledge in counseling patients on increasing physical activity through exercise. Primary care physicians address preventive care and chronic medical problems and are uniquely poised in encouraging physical activity in their patients. This presentation will provide information and resources for primary care physicians in counseling their patients on increasing physical activity and improve health outcomes especially in patients with obesity and physical restrictions.

Objectives:

  • Describe current CDC recommendations on physical activity for health and weight loss.
  • Identify abnormal physical changes in patients with overweight and obesity that limit physical activity.
  • Develop practical exercise recommendations for patients that can be used by primary care physicals in the clinical setting.
  • Identify patients who need exercise stress testing prior to exercise.
  • Develop an exercise prescription.
