Overview:

Research shows that about 30% of youth across pediatric medical populations experiences medical traumatic stress. Both children undergoing injury or serious illness and their parents can experience symptoms, and knowing how to recognize, screen for, and treat pediatric medical trauma in primary care can ensure families are properly supported as they navigate the difficulties that come with experiencing medical trauma. This presentation will review post-traumatic symptoms for medical trauma in pediatric populations, how to screen for those symptoms, how to identify risk and protective factors, and how to intervene at the universal, targeted, and clinical level.

Objectives:

1. Participants will identify difference between trauma and PTSD as well as constellation of symptom presentations in pediatric populations.
2. Participants will describe prevalence of medical trauma as well as the impact it can have on children and parents.
3. Participants will describe different interventions for medical trauma in pediatric populations.
