British Society of Gastroenterology guidelines on the management of irritable bowel syndrome
Michelle Davis, DO

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) remains one of the most common yet understudied gastrointestinal disorders in both primary and secondary care. The British Society of Gastroenterology has completed a systematic literature review on various treatment modalities, leading to the development of a comprehensive practice guideline for IBS management. This POEMS presentation summarizes these treatment guidelines, in addition to reviewing updates on the gold standard symptom-based diagnostic criteria for IBS, known as the Rome IV criteria. Following this presentation, providers should demonstrate an understanding of these updated guidelines and their graded efficacies, as well as an ability to apply them towards appropriate clinical settings.

After this presentation, attendees will be able to:

1.      Identify clinical manifestations of IBS and describe its classifications.

2.      Apply the Rome IV criteria and BCS guidelines toward IBS diagnosis and management, respectively.

3.      Demonstrate an understanding of IBS treatment options and their respective graded efficacies.
