Overview:

Rash Decisions: Distinguishing Facial Eruptions in Primary Care

Fehima Dawy, MD

This presentation provides a practical approach to evaluating facial rashes in primary care settings. It reviews common conditions such as rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, perioral dermatitis, contact dermatitis, and herpes zoster, while highlighting key features that distinguish them from autoimmune and other systemic diseases. Emphasis is placed on avoiding common pitfalls, including inappropriate facial steroid use and recognizing red flags that warrant further work up or referral.

After this presentation, attendees will be able to:

  1. Recognize common facial rash patterns
    2. Build a focused differential based on distribution and morphology
    3. Identify red flags and “can’t miss” diagnoses
    4. How to initiate appropriate first line management and referral
