Overview:

During this interactive session Dr. Nehman Andry-Associate Professor of Family & Community Medicine, will identify common challenges to teaching medical students in the outpatient setting. Three common clinical teaching scenarios will be presented, followed by discussion led by Dr. Andry where he will ask attendees to share their best teaching practices. Following each scenario, Dr. Andry will review practical and proven evidence-based teaching and feedback strategies, including the One-Minute Preceptor/Five Microskills method. Creating a positive learning environment, implementing basic strategies to advise students of expectations, and using this systematic framework- can make one’s clinical teaching more effective, efficient, and enjoyable.

Objectives:

  1.  Identify common challenges to teaching medical students in the outpatient setting.
    2.  Explain the One-Minute Preceptor/Five Microskills method of teaching and providing feedback to medical students.
    3.  Discuss tips to effectively implement this method of teaching and providing feedback.
