Overview:

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic red blood cell disorder that occurs in 1 out of 365 African American births and 1 out of 16,300 Hispanic births. Children with SCD often experience vaso-occlusive pain crises along with other medical complications, such as acute chest syndrome and stroke. SCD complications may also exacerbate academic, social, and behavioral outcomes among children. This presentation will discuss the importance of utilizing the primary care team such as primary care physicians, behavioral health clinicians, pharmacists, parents, and other professionals to improve the quality of life for children with SCD.

Objectives:

By the end of this presentation, learners will be able to:
1.  Understand general information about sickle cell disease (SCD), including complications and treatments available for children.
2.  Increase their knowledge about the relationships between SCD complications, academic achievement, and emotional outcomes.
3.  Identify multidisciplinary approaches to assist children and families with SCD.
