Overview:

Thoughts on Informed Consent and End of Life: The Nexus between Autonomy, Substituted Judgment, and Beneficence

James H. Henderson II, MD

We will undertake a basic review of the guiding history and principles of medical ethics. We will then review specific issues involved in protecting patient autonomy and understanding the application of informed consent and how this is viewed in circumstances involving substituted judgment/medical proxies. This will be further explored in end-of-life situations.

After this presentation, attendees will be able to identify:

  1. Review the basic undergirding principle of medical ethics.
  2. Understand the real-world implications of appropriate application of informed consent.
  3. Discuss the utilization of substituted judgement, especially in end-of-life circumstances
  4. Discuss improved provider and family interactions in end-of-life care
