Personal Statement:

Dr. Sebastiaan Bol earned his Ph.D. at the University of Amsterdam in The Netherlands. His Ph.D. research was focused on host genetic factors affecting replication of HIV in monocyte-derived macrophages.

After two years of postdoctoral research in the Le Roch lab at the University of California Riverside, where he studied the connection between genome architecture and gene expression of Plasmodium falciparum, he joined the lab of Dr. Bunnik after she was recruited by UT Health in 2016.

In the Bunnik lab he studies the development of naturally acquired protection to malaria and basic Plasmodium parasite biology, using human tissues and in vitro cell culture.

Sebastiaan is passionate about training students in the lab and enthusing them for science.

Outside of his work in the Bunnik lab, Dr. Bol collaborates with scientists around the globe to study feline behavior & olfaction.

Sebastiaan enjoys collecting perfumes and listening to heavy metal music.
