UT San Antonio

Vascular Neurology Fellowship Program

This is a one-year ACGME accredited fellowship in Vascular Neurology (VN). We offer one VN fellowship position and have VN faculty from several backgrounds, including Stroke, Neuro-critical Care, Interventional Neuroradiology, Vascular Neurology, and Vascular Neurosurgery. The primary clinical experience is the inpatient stroke neurology service at the University Hospital (UH). On average, the fellow leads this service every other week and works directly with the VN attending, stroke physician assistant, neurology resident, medicine resident, and medical students. During the alternating weeks, the fellow participates in a variety of UH experiences which include Diagnostic Neuroradiology, Interventional Neuroradiology, Neuro-critical Care, and Research.

The Interventional Neuroradiology experience is at both UH and St. Luke’s Baptist Hospital (SLBH). Exposure to Transcranial Doppler is integrated into the UH Neuro-critical Care rotation. UH is a 617-bed Joint Commission Certified Comprehensive Stroke Center that serves both San Antonio and South Texas. It is the main teaching hospital for the University of Texas at San Antonio, UT San Antonio. SLBH is the neuroscience center for the Brain and Stroke Network at Baptist Health System and is a DNV Certified Comprehensive Stroke Center.

Throughout the year, the fellow participates in two half-day vascular neurology clinics: UH and Medical Arts & Research Center (MARC). Each clinic provides continuity of care and exposure to a variety of patients and pathophysiologies. The MARC clinic is an endovascular neurosurgery clinic staffed by the program director. Patients are not only evaluated for stroke and transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), but also intracerebral hemorrhage, intracranial aneurysms, and arteriovenous malformations. The UH clinic is staffed by the inpatient VN attending and enables the fellow to follow their patients from the UH inpatient service. The fellow is also assigned new patients who are referred for subspecialty evaluation.

The VN fellow participates in ongoing clinical stroke research from the NIH, Industry, the Lone Star Stroke Research Consortium (http://lonestarstroke.com), and NIH StrokeNet (https://www.nihstrokenet.org).

The fellowship runs from July 1st through June 30th. Applicants must have completed an ACGME-accredited residency in Neurology or Child Neurology. We participate in the NRMP and accept applications via ERAS.
