Who Are We?

The Movement Disorders section functions as the Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders Program (PDMDP). Currently there are four fellowship trained movement disorders specialist, one movement disorders fellow in training, and two advanced practice providers.  There is also direct assistance and active collaboration with faculty from Neurosurgery, the Glenn Biggs Institute for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Disorders, and Neuropsychology.

We focus on the provision of quality care, while obtaining patient satisfaction, and patient retention.  We are a comprehensive multi-disciplinary center, where patients can find specialized healthcare providers that understand the disease process and its ramifications, providing access to supplementary services from the Biggs Institute, neurocognitive evaluations with qualified neuropsychologists, psychiatric evaluations for mood disorders, neurosurgery evaluation for deep brain stimulation (DBS) implantation, genetic counseling, rehabilitation (PT/OT), speech and swallowing dysfunction (ENT), and other medical subspecialties.

Expertise:

We are the only comprehensive Movement Disorders Center in the area of South Central Texas. We are partner site for the Huntington Disease Society of America Center of Excellence Level 1 with UTHealth Houston. This alliance has benefited our Huntington disease community by providing access to genetic counseling, neuropsychology, social work, educational events, support groups, and clinic trials.
We also offer a MIND Movement Disorder clinic for patients needing expedited evaluation of cognitive complaints in the setting of parkinsonism.  Similar comprehensive specialized clinics by condition/disease will be created in the near future.

Innovation:

Our center offers cutting edge therapies involving Deep Brain Stimulation, Continuous Levodopa Pump, Botulinum Toxin injections, and all newly approved therapies for all movement disorders.

Research:

We offer a robust research program including many Clinical trials and innovative research for patients with Parkinson’s Disease and other movement disorders.

Education:

We offer one two-year position for Movement Disorders Fellowship. The first year focuses on primarily clinical and procedural skills and the second year incorporates additional time for research. We also provide active clinical education to medical students during their neurology rotation, neurology residents in training, and occasionally visitor fellows from other specialties.  There is also participation in recurrent lecture series as part of the department educational curriculum

Community:

We offer multiple educational talks and resources about Parkinson’s Disease and movement disorders to our community. We also collaborate and work closely with national and regional Parkinson Foundations with a focus on improving patients’ lives and raising awareness and providing resources.
