Undergraduate Medical Education
Shadowing, Observership, & Rotations
Shadowing & Observership Opportunities:
Thank you for your interest in medical student elective rotations, shadowing, and observership opportunities within the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UT Health San Antonio.
Due to the high volume of requests and our commitment to providing meaningful and compliant experiences, we have established the following criteria for eligibility:
Official Medical Student Rotations:
- Rotations are offered in defined blocks each academic year for internal and external medical students
- Please note that preferential selection is given to students who are interested in a career in pathology, especially during rotation timeframes that are time sensitive got the residency application and interview process.
- Application and ultimate approval require additional completion of a form with submission to Yaneli Medrano at Medranoy1@uthscsa.edu
| Rotation | Course Number | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Hematopathology | 4001 | 4 weeks |
| Transfusion Medicine | 4002 | 4 weeks |
| Hematopathology/Transfusion Medicine | 4003 | 4 weeks (2 weeks in each subspecialty) |
| Surgical Pathology | 4004 | 4 weeks |
| Cytopathology | 4012 | 4 weeks |
| Pathology Overview (Recommended for students with limited exposure to pathology or students interested in entering other medical subspecialties who want to explore how pathology relates to and impacts their chosen specialty.) | 4013 | 2 or 4 weeks |
| Forensic Pathology (This rotation occurs at the Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office and overall does not provide exposure to UTHSCSA Core Pathology Faculty or Residents.) | 4015 | 2 weeks |
Medical Students (UT Health San Antonio – Long School of Medicine):
- Medical student electives offered for MS2, MS3, and MS4 students

Observership & Shadowing:
Please note that we cannot accommodate observership or shadowing requests that do not meet the criteria outlined below. Shadowing and observation opportunities are limited based on the ability to provide a balanced educational experience for the residents, fellows, and official student rotators. Virtual shadowing and observership are not offered.
Medical Students (UT Health San Antonio – Long School of Medicine):
-
- We offer shadowing for currently enrolled UTHSCSA medical students who are interested in gaining more exposure to pathology before the pursuit of official elective rotations.
- Additional information and student activities can be obtained from the UT Health San Antonio Pathology Student Association
UT Health San Antonio or University Hospital Employees:
- Employees interested in shadowing or observerships may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Undergraduate Students:
- Shadowing is rarely granted for undergraduate students. If approved, the student must:
- Complete a visiting student application
- Become a registered UHS volunteer to obtain the appropriate clearance and hospital badge
High School Students:
- Shadowing opportunities for high school students are extremely limited. Students must:
- Be at least 16 years old
- Register as a UHS volunteer to ensure proper clearance and badging
- Complete a minor visiting student application (received upon shadowing confirmation)
For inquiries about rotation availability, approval, or any additional information, please contact Yaneli Medrano.
