Our Fellows see a wide range of patients with diverse and interesting pathology, between our two large hospitals – University Hospital (public hospital) and Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital. Our Fellows also frequently rotate with nearby Methodist Hospital and have continuity clinic at the UT Medical Arts and Research Center (MARC).

Our Fellows experience unique elective opportunities including:

    • We also have an ongoing Heart Failure & Cardiac Transplantation rotation at Methodist Hospital that is incorporated into our Block rotation for PGY-5 and PGY-6 Fellows. Fellows have an incredible opportunity to participate in the care of end stage heart failure patients. This includes exposure to the work up, placement, and management of LVAD devices, ECMO, and heart transplants.

  • Outpatient continuity clinics through the VA and the UT Medical Arts & Research Center (MARC).
  • 4-week block scheduling, night float rotation, and rotating weekend on-call rotations which affords a desirable work-life balance.
  • Fellows easily achieve COCATS II level training in reading echocardiography, stress echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, and nuclear cardiology.
  • Protected weekly didactic lectures where fellows work with a faculty mentor to master basic interpretive skills, case-based learning, and board preparation. Each July all incoming fellows attend our annual “Boot Camp” prior to taking overnight calls. This boot camp covers the major cardiac emergencies all cardiologists need to be aware of when covering the hospital and has been highly praised each year by the trainees.
