A Message from our Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program Director

Dr. Anand PrasadThank you for your interest in our Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program. Here at UT Health San Antonio we take great pride in our teaching program and are firmly committed to the highest standards for education and clinical care. The success of our program is due in large part to our educational philosophy that makes teaching our highest priority. We recognize and try to meet the individual needs of each house officer. Our graduates have gone on to successful careers in academic medicine, large hospital systems, and urban and small-town practices.

The UT Health Science Center at San Antonio has the only Interventional Cardiology fellowship program in San Antonio and the south Texas region stretching down from Austin to the lower Rio Grande Valley. We train fellows who stay in this region, providing cardiovascular care to a high-risk and underserved population. In addition to providing care at University Health System, our fellows also serve this nation’s veteran population in the South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS) at Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans’ Hospital. STVHCS serves one of the largest primary service areas for veterans in the nation.

The interventional Cardiology subspecialty training program has established three important measures of success. The first is patient evaluation for therapy. We expect fellows to demonstrate independence in defining appropriate patient selection and to use evidence-based medicine to outline a treatment algorithm. Secondly, we evaluate fellows on technical expertise across the broad platforms of technology. We expect every fellow to be credentialed in vascular closure, coronary stent/IVUS and FFR. Thirdly, we monitor success and failure with active conferences that fellows participate in with complication reviews as well as case studies. All fellows taking the Interventional Cardiology board exam have passed.

We attract candidates from across the nation with competitive academic records who are enthusiastic about Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology and are looking for a supportive program in which to flourish. If you are looking for a friendly and supportive training environment that will allow you to reach your full potential, we invite you to visit us for a closer look.

Sincerely,

Anand Prasad, M.D., FACC, FSCAI, RPVI
