“EMS Lessons Learned as the Air Force Surgeon General”

Dr. Miller assumed his role as Executive Director of the Military Health Institute at UT Health San Antonio in October, 2024. He joined UTHSA with more than 30 years of service in the United States Air Force, where he held several top leadership roles. Throughout his distinguished career, Miller served as command surgeon, director of education and training and director of medical operations. Most recently, he retired as surgeon general of the United States Air Force and Space Force.
As Surgeon General, Dr. Miller advised the Secretary of the United States Air Force, the Air Force Chief of Staff, the Space Force Chief of Space Operations and the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs concerning the health of the air expeditionary force, airmen and guardians. Miller authorized the delivery of medical resources worldwide for the Air Force Medical Services, developing plans and programs to support medical missions.

In the Emergency Department of one of the nation’s busiest Level 1 trauma tertiary care centers, Dr. Hope often sees patients on the worst days of their lives. Always passionate about preventive medicine, she inspires others to improve their habits and avoid needing to come to the emergency department. Dr. Hope is an Assistant Professor at the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine and teaches Behavior Change and Motivational Interviewing courses to future physicians. She speaks regularly on a broad variety of medical and health-related topics, the most popular of which have been Healthy Habits, Confidence and Overcoming Imposter Syndrome, and Resilience.
