Fellowship Program Structure

The Division of Gastroenterology & Nutrition at UT Health San Antonio offers a fully accredited one-year fellowship training program in Transplant Hepatology designed according to guidelines for training put forth by the American Board of Internal Medicine and by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.

Core training in our fellowship is composed of rotations that cover the spectrum of general hepatology and transplantation. We offer a comprehensive approach to both inpatient and outpatient consultations, liver biopsy and paracentesis and an understanding of other investigative procedures such as those offered by interventional radiology and surgery. We offer state-of-the-art inpatient and outpatient facilities within the University Health System and the Texas Liver Institute. Fellows will have the opportunity to gain further experience in hepatobiliary oncology, abdominal radiology, pediatric hepatology, and clinical research. Our goal is for our trainees to successfully complete the ABIM certifying examination in Transplant Hepatology with our support, mentorship, and commitment to the highest degree of fostering professionalism and academic preparation.

On Call Schedule

In regards to on-call schedule, no in-house call is required during the Fellowship Program. Fellows may share call with an attending by fielding the first call to help develop their understanding of a career in transplant medicine. The duty hours and call schedule conform to the requirements of the fellowship review committee of the ACGME.

Conferences & Rotations

There are weekly and bimonthly mandatory conferences that include the transplant selection meeting, transplant grand rounds, pathology conference, tumor board and periodic city-wide journal clubs. Each fellow is also encouraged and financially supported to attend at least one national academic conference per year as a presenter and attendee.

During the fellowship, each fellow will rotate at Texas Liver Institute and University Health System through the University Transplant Center.

A Message from the Program Director

The Division of Gastroenterology & Nutrition and University Transplant Center appreciate your interest in the Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Program at UT Health San Antonio.

This ACGME accredited one year fellowship is open to those who have successfully completed a GI fellowship program. A hybrid program may also be possible, completing this fellowship within the 3 year GI fellowship. The program will offer both inpatient and outpatient training, a comprehensive and rigorous curriculum covering general hepatology and transplantation medicine. The trainee will have exposure to both adult and pediatric transplantation as well as adult to adult living donor transplantation. With more than 100 transplants performed yearly and robust inpatient and outpatient exposure, the trainee will be poised for a career in academic or private medicine in a transplant program.

Clinical research and academic activities are integrated into this training program and scholarly activities including publications are highly encouraged and supported. With 9 hepatologists and 8 transplant surgeons, the multidisciplinary aspects of the program are unique and allow for an excellent cross-section of exposure to several areas of expertise. We are interested in high quality trainees who will match the high level of training offered and invite you to explore this opportunity.
