The following are frequently asked questions from prospective residents regarding the application process, required documents, and program details.
Frequently Asked Questions
Interviews run from October through January. Invitations are issued on a rolling basis. Preliminary interviews are held on Mondays and Categorical interviews are held on Thursdays and Fridays. We limit the number of applicants on any given day to assure you a more personal view of our training program.
This information is reviewed by our residency application committee and invitations are extended as early as possible via email. We understand the difficulties students face making complicated travel arrangements.
Our program will use signals as a sign that an applicant is interested in our program and that applicant will be considered highly when allocating interview invitations. Signals will not be used for rank list decision making.
We prefer scores > 210 but do not have an absolute cutoff. Applicants who have previous failures on the USMLE are generally less likely to successfully match in our program
We prefer scores > 500 but do not have an absolute cutoff.
Applicants who graduated more than 5 years ago are generally less likely to successfully match in our program.
While US clinical experience is not an absolute requirement, it is highly encouraged.

We sponsor J-1 visas only.
No, you do not have to be ECFMG certified to apply, but you need to be certified by match day.
No, we do not offer observerships or externships if you have already graduated medical school. Those still in medical school can apply for a Sub-I or away rotation here at UT Health San Antonio through the Visiting Student Learning OpportunitiesTM (VSLO®) program. International students should review the School of Medicine’s current policies here. The residency program does not make arrangements for observerships or externships.

Prospective applicants who are interested in the Point-of-Care Ultrasound (Track) apply through a separate NRMP match option #1722140C4. For all other tracks, residents apply after the main match.

We accept applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) offered by the American Association of Medical Colleges. We DO NOT accept applications outside of ERAS. For more information regarding the electronic application process please contact your dean’s office or access ERAS online.
The documents required to apply to our residency program are the following:
- A complete and official medical school transcript;
2. The Dean’s letter (MSPE);
3. Three letters of recommendation. Two from members of the Department of Internal Medicine and letters from attending physicians supervising your medicine sub-internship or ICU experience are highly suggested;
4. United States Medical Licensure Examination (USMLE) transcript (parts I and II);
5. Personal statement.

We are not able to comment on the status of individual applications. You will be notified via email with an invitation to interview or if your application has been declined.
Yes, COVID-19 vaccinations are required. The Audie L. Murphy VA does not allow for exemptions from COVID vaccinations.
