Overview of the Graduate Programs in Molecular Medicine

The Graduate Program in Molecular Medicine was established in 1994 as a forward-looking academic program designed to train students at the interface of basic and clinical sciences. Its inception marked the first such program in the State of Texas and was rooted in the firm belief that rigorous training of scientists in the genetic and biochemical basis of human disease would provide an effective means to translate rapid advances in basic research into practical health benefits for the 21st-century public.

Accordingly, the Program in Molecular Medicine offers a research-oriented, interdisciplinary program of study in the following areas as they relate to the fundamental understanding of cancer biology and its prevention: signal transduction and control of gene expression, cell cycle and checkpoint controls, DNA damage repair and mechanisms of genomic instability, regulated protein degradation, and animal models of aging and cancer. The curriculum provides a program for those seeking the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.
