All research involving animal or human subjects, specimens, or records is governed by federal regulations to protect subjects and their privacy. These regulations apply to medical students and their projects. Students must have specific training in relevant research ethics (available online, see below) and must submit applications for IRB or IACUC approval in advance of collecting data. There are no exceptions.  Turnaround time for IRB or IACUC approval can be six weeks or longer, depending on the risk to the subject for participating in the study. Faculty mentors are responsible for ensuring student compliance on these any other regulatory or university policies appropriate to their research activities.

Note: Any research done with human subjects in non-UTHSCSA institutions (such as University Hospital or clinics, VA Hospital or clinics, or other hospitals, community programs or agencies) will require approval by that institution in addition to UTHSCSA approval. This step requires additional preparation and wait time. Discuss the approval process with your mentor early in the collaboration to ensure realistic timelines for completing project milestones.

Please note the Office for Research does not grant access to Sunrise or EPIC. The information provided below is provided for your convenience and should be confirmed with your mentor. Complete the UHS Epic Access Packet. Email completed packets to research@uhs-sa.com for approval.

Alphonso Chiscano Summer Research Internship Award in General Thoracic Surgery
The Division of General Thoracic Surgery, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at UT Health San Antonio is pleased to announce a Summer Research Stipend award for 2021 in honor of Dr. Alphonso Chiscano. The purpose of the award is to introduce the field of General Thoracic Surgery to either a first or second year medical student who is interested in performing research, with goals of broadening their educational experience by providing an opportunity to spend their summer break performing research within the Division of General Thoracic Surgery. This program is funded and administered by the Cardiothoracic Research Professorship and will provide a stipend of $1,000 to the successful applicant.

The MD candidate chosen will be enthusiastic, motivated, a self-starter, goal-oriented and potentially interested in cardiothoracic surgery as a career choice. It is expected that the awardee will devote his/her summer break full time to research project(s), with additional time and effort throughout the year as necessary to see the project through to fruition.

Candidates must be a first or second year medical student in good standing as of January 2021, be available for a short interview (15-30 minutes), and submit an updated CV and a personal statement not exceeding one-page outlining their interests and what they hope to accomplish (i.e., a publication, learn new skill, exposure to CT surgery, etc.).

If selected, award recipients will be mentored by the faculty members and must agree to submit a time sheet report within 30 days of completion of their summer internship. They will also be expected – at a minimum – to present at the next LSOM Research Day. Applications will be accepted through Jun 11, 2021 (Friday); the award winner will be notified by Jul 01, 2021.
