Curriculum

Athletic Training Residency Curriculum

Clinical Practice
Residents will be assigned to a local high school in San Antonio or to UTSA athletics. The resident will be actively involved in all aspects of the sports medicine care and work with seasoned athletic trainers to allow the resident to integrate knowledge gained from all content areas of the residency program into clinical practice.

Clinical Mentoring
The resident will be mentored 1-on-1 while treating athletes in the athletic training room. This mentoring will occur with highly skilled athletic trainers and/or with an orthopedic- or sports-certified specialist and fellowship-trained manual therapist to advance the resident’s skill in evaluation and treatment of sports-related injuries, including examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis, intervention, and return to sport.

Research & Investigation
Evidence informed practice is woven throughout the scaffolding of the residency program. Residents will develop and present a case report at the end of the residency program. They are highly encouraged to submit these for publication or conference presentation.

Interprofessional Collaboration
Residents will collaborate with sports medicine doctors and orthopedic surgeons throughout the residency program. These collaborations can occur on the sidelines, at athlete doctor visits, and in surgery. This provides residents with exposure to athlete care from injury to return to sport.

Didactics & Lab
There will be a mixture of online and in person learning. The residency curriculum includes anatomy, biomechanics, examination, differential diagnosis, movement system impairments, manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, strength and conditioning concepts, and return to sport testing. The emphasis is on hands on learning and discussion to facilitate integration of the residency material into clinical practice.
