Support and Wellness
Our residents are considered one of the strongest aspects of the orthopaedic program. Through our formal and informal mentoring, social gatherings, and family-like feel of our program, we pride ourselves in a residency culture that promotes resident well-being and an atmosphere of support. We also strive to include the families of our residents in social and wellness activities in order to provide a reasonable work-life balance throughout this rigorous training process. Finally, we aim to provide our residents with trainings, courses, and conferences outside of our official residency program in order to provide them with a wide variety of skills and educational exposure.
Residency training is a rigorous 5 years, and you’ll want to share in this adventure with people who support you like family. Our program prides itself in the closeness of the residents and their families.
Each year, we welcome 6 new interns to our program. Our annual celebration in July is the first of many events aimed at fostering meaningful connections within our residency program.
In addition to our Intern Welcome, we spend 2 weeks in late June ensuring our interns are ready to hit the ground running by July 1. Activities including casting/suturing clinics, faculty and resident-led lectures, and on-the-job training with current residents to learn intern duties in a safe and welcoming environment.
San Antonio is surrounded by world-class hiking, biking, and climbing trails. Our residents regularly take advantage of all the outdoors has to offer including the nearby Enchanted Rock, Garner State Park, and over 80 miles of local developed multi-use trails.
Conferences and Industry Trainings
Our residents enjoy generous support from both the Orthopaedic Department as well as industry sponsors to attend educational activities across the country.
Medical Student Mentorship
Residents regularly provide formal and informal mentoring to UT Health Long School of Medicine students interested in orthopaedic surgery.
