Fellowship Program

Fellowship Administration
The Division of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology Fellowship participates in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). The following requirements must be met in order to apply:
- Applications for the fellowship training program must be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
- Applicants must be U.S. citizens, permanent residents of the U.S., or J-1 Visa Holders for fellowship positions at UT Health San Antonio. We do not accept applications from H1B1 visa holders.
- Courses in conducting research are available to help fellows interested in research.
- We alternate between accepting 2 fellows and 1 fellow every other year.
Structure and Curriculum
Our Rheumatology fellows provide inpatient consultation for University Hospital and the Audie Murphy VA Hospital. The outpatient clinical experience includes weekly continuity clinics at the Audie Murphy VA Hospital, Robert B. Green Clinic, and Lupus Clinic at the MARC. In addition, fellows also rotate in specialty clinics including the Gout Clinic and the MSK Ultrasound Clinic at the Audie Murphy VA Hospital. We also have weekly Rheumatology Grand Rounds on Thursdays and a weekly Rheumatology Board Review session on Tuesdays.
Graduates
Each year, approximately 80% of our graduating fellows choose to enter private practice, while the remainder pursue academic positions at leading institutions.

Teaching Locations
UT Health Medical Arts & Research Center (MARC)
Fellows will frequently spend time at the MARC facility participating in our ongoing outpatient clinical experiences such as the Lupus Clinic, the High Risk Rheumatoid Arthritis Clinic, and the MARC Infusion Services.
University Health System (UHS)
Our fellows will provide inpatient consultation as well as outpatient clinical experience during weekly clinics at UHS locations.
Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans’ Hospital (VA)
Fellows will provide inpatient consultation, outpatient clinical experience during weekly clinics, and rotate in speciality clinics such as the Gout Clinic and the MSK Ultrasound Clinic at the VA Hospital facility.

At UT Health San Antonio, we strive to provide an exceptional educational and clinical experience for our rheumatology fellows. Our training sites include University Hospital, the Audie Murphy VA Hospital, and the UT Health Medical Arts and Research Center. Our fellows take care of a diverse patient population and are exposed to a variety of different pathology in the population that we serve. Our fellowship program emphasizes a strong clinical training and research opportunities are available to work with world class faculty in the area of rheumatoid arthritis.
