Diabetes

Diabetes is a group of medical conditions where your blood sugar levels are elevated. There are several subtypes of diabetes, but people with diabetes all have high blood sugar levels. This can be due to low level of insulin production by your pancreas (Type 1) or by an inability to use insulin normally (Type 2).

Type 2 diabetes is the most common type and is associated with obesity and poor dietary choices. High levels of blood sugar can lead to many serious medical problems, including heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease, and peripheral vascular disease.

Blood tests can determine if you have diabetes. Exercise, weight loss, and a healthy diet can have a significant impact on blood sugar levels. Medications (pills or insulin injections) may be required to obtain good control if dietary changes are not adequate.
