David Rodriguez was 36 when he was diagnosed with end-stage kidney failure related to high blood pressure. Two months later, his father learned that his kidneys were also failing.

After two years on dialysis, Rodriguez was fortunate to receive a kidney transplant from a live donor through a paired exchange in 2011, when the wait time for a kidney from a deceased donor was years. His father wasn’t so lucky. A month after Rodriguez’s transplant, his father died at 60.

“Everything I do is in his memory,” said Rodriguez, now 47, who left his legal assistant job for a new career as a patient relationship specialist at University Transplant Center.
