School Nurse and Now Telehealthcare!

Without ever leaving school, your child can have an appointment with a top-notch UT Health medical expert, and you can join in from home or work, or anywhere! And all of this is just a click away with something called telemedicine.

It is part of a special partnership with Roosevelt and UT Health San Antonio Pediatrics, the largest group of pediatricians in South Texas.

How does it work?

With the parent or caregiver’s permission, a student may be evaluated by a board-certified pediatrician or certified nurse practitioner through the magic of your computer phone screen. Parents or caregivers have the option of being a part of the telemedicine visit by attending the appointment at the school. If the parent is unable to attend the appointment, UT Health San Antonio will call them with an update afterward. If the child has a condition appropriate for telemedicine, the school nurse can connect with a UT Health San Antonio pediatrician or nurse practitioner.

The UT Health San Antonio provider will complete an assessment of the student to include input from the school nurse and participating parent/legal guardian during the visit. The school nurse will assist the provider or pediatrician during the evaluation. The pediatrician or provider can hear the student’s heart and lungs with a digital stethoscope and can closely examine the student’s ears, throat, rash, or abrasions with a high-definition camera.

Upon completion of the exam, the provider will give instructions for follow-up care and submit a prescription to the pharmacy of choice if needed. A record of the student’s confidential visit will be kept in UT Health San Antonio medical records for future reference and a copy is sent to the primary care physician on record. The parent/guardian will have access to all treatment information through the UT Health San Antonio Patient Portal.

The following conditions are appropriate for a Telehealth Visit:

  • Fever
  • Ear Pain
  • Sore throat
  • Earaches
  • Abrasions and scrapes
  • Asthma
  • Allergies
  • Coughs and colds
  • Flu
  • Head lice
  • Rashes and minor skin infections
  • Pink eye
  • Headaches

How can School Virtual Care benefit my family?

Virtual Care lets your child see a doctor or nurse practitioner through a virtual connection in the school nurse’s office. The pediatrician or nurse practitioner will diagnose your child, and even call in a prescription to your chosen pharmacy, if needed. You have the peace of mind that comes with knowing your child has been seen by UT Health’s doctor or nurse practitioner. It’s one more way that we’re working to make childhood, and parenthood, just a little simpler.

Preregistration in the program by the parent or legal guardian is required. If your child’s school is participating in our program, you can register now.
