General Psychiatry Residency Program: Research and Publications
Research and Publications
Beyond the Clinic
In addition to the robust clinical training that UT Health San Antonio psychiatry offers, the program also provides ample opportunities for residents to engage in research, community service, advocacy, leadership and career development. Residents have protected elective time for 3 full months in their second year, one half day each week throughout their third year, and 5 full months in their fourth year during which to pursue such opportunities.
Residents who desire more time and support for clinical research can apply for the Residency Research Track, which provides up to 40% of their total training time for research during PGY2 – PGY4 years, as well as faculty mentorship and training in research methodology.
Travel to national and local conferences is a wonderful educational and networking experience that is encouraged by the program. UT Health Psychiatry, the GME office for UTHSCSA, and the Air Force all provide funding opportunities to help residents with travel costs, registration fees, and other expenses associated with attending conferences.
Additionally, residents often serve in a variety of leadership roles at the institutional, local, state and national level. Residents have taken part in fundraising for the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI), participated in mental health advocacy at the Texas State Capitol, and organized outreach programs for refugees. UT Health San Antonio psychiatry residents are actively involved in making a difference in their community and world!
Quality Improvement
To help improve our program’s ability to treat and care for the patients in our community clinics and hospitals, every year the PGY3 class completes multiple Quality Improvement (QI) projects. They work in groups of 4-5 residents and spend the entire year creating, implementing, and reviewing their QI projects. Each group works with a faculty mentor who guides the project and helps the residents interface with clinic and hospital administrative staff. The goal of these projects is to identify a need in a clinical setting, figure out how to fix it, and learn how to implement a new process in a clinical setting. At the end of the year, the resident create posters of their QI projects and present them at UT Health Psychiatry’s annual Research Day. Some recent projects include getting rTMS started at a clinical site, improving continuity of care for adolescents transitioning to adult psychiatry, and creating an inpatient order set for buprenorphine ordering.
