Community Medicine
Community context is central to our patient care mission. Our program places residents in a wide range of clinical settings all across San Antonio – with special emphasis on serving those areas that are underserved. All residents participate in a Community Oriented Primary Care program. This curricular area is scheduled both in longitudinal and block experiences during the three years of residency. Additional elective time is available. Community medicine experiences are developed and taught by Family Medicine faculty members.
Residents complete activities designed to familiarize them with community resources and agencies. Residents gain experience in community settings including school health centers, United Way agencies, group homes, and nursing homes. Our faculty and residents also serve the community by participating in health fairs and other health promotion activities. Recent Resident Scholarly Work We encourage our residents to participate in scholarly projects. Many of our residents have had their work accepted for publication, and they have a large number of works in progress. Several residents have presented work at national and regional meetings. Faculty members work with residents to develop the clinical inquiry skills need to flourish in the rapidly changing medical industry.
Full Scope Practice
Ambulatory Procedures
Each resident spends one four-week block in the ambulatory procedures block which affords training in minor surgery, vasectomies, colposcopies, circumcisions, and other common outpatient procedures under the supervision of family medicine faculty.
Hospital Medicine
Over the course of his or her residency, each resident completes five four-week blocks learning inpatient medicine at University Hospital. Our hospitalist rotations are supervised by Family Medicine faculty members.
Behavioral Science
Residents in our program enjoy both a block and longitudinal experience in the area of behavioral science taught by family medicine faculty.
Geriatrics
The curriculum in geriatrics is strong and is taught by fellowship trained family medicine faculty.
Maternity Care
Our program’s maternity care curriculum takes advantage of multiple teaching sites. Residents care for moms and babies and perform deliveries and newborn care under the supervision of family medicine faculty. The rotation includes time in community prenatal clinics.
Pediatrics
Each resident spends two four-week blocks in an ambulatory pediatrics rotation. During these rotations, residents gain experience in well-child checks, pediatric acute care visits and other common outpatient health problems of children. In addition to ambulatory pediatrics, residents also spend four weeks on an inpatient pediatric services, four weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit, and four weeks in the newborn nursery.
About our program
Welcome to South Texas’ premier Family and Community Medicine Residency. Founded in 1972, our program focuses on comprehensive family-oriented care for the underserved population of San Antonio and surrounding counties.
Our program is designed to emphasize the continuity that family physicians enjoy in their day-to-day practice. Patients visit our state-of-the-art Family Health Center for outpatient medical and preventive care. When hospitalization or higher-level care is required, our patients are directly admitted to The Family Medicine Inpatient Service at University Hospital, San Antonio’s best-ranked hospital.
As part of UT Health San Antonio, our program also has direct access to the in-depth expertise and rich resources of the university setting. This allows for close collaboration with other specialties and interdisciplinary experiences that enhance education. The residency program also enjoys longstanding links to university research and policy units. In this way, residents are able to gain an appreciation of those higher-level issues that impact patient care.
Our program emphasizes the teaching of our residents by highly skilled and experienced family medicine physicians. We are fully accredited by the ACGME and currently have 15 PGY1 residents, 15 PGY2 residents and 15 PGY3 residents.
Mission
The mission of the Family Medicine Residency Program of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio is to train balanced physicians. Excellent physicians treat their patients using an approach that considers the biological basis of disease within the framework of the patient’s social context, mental health, and spiritual needs.
Residents and faculty members are encouraged to model a balanced, healthy lifestyle. The program’s training prepares residents to meet the primary care needs of the population and to develop skills to flourish in the rapidly changing medical industry. Residents are trained to care for patients in all phases of life.
Our training sites focus on caring for an urban, underserved population, but our residents are prepared to be successful in a variety of practice settings.

Our residency training emphasizes:
- Integrity—Adherence to sound moral and ethical principles in all aspects of professional work is the essential foundation of medical practice.
- Excellence—Scholarly efforts are expected to focus on the resident’s vision of his/her future practice.
- Commitment to the Community—Residents become immersed in and learn to serve the community in which we live and practice.
- Continuity practice in ambulatory setting—First year residents average over 2 half-days per week in the Family Health Center.
- Communication skills—Verbal and written communication skills are the cornerstone of quality patient-centered medical care.
- Family Physicians trained by Family Physicians—70% of the curriculum is taught by Family Medicine Faculty.
Central to our mission is the importance of the family and the community in the context of patient care. We have a profound belief that social and psychological factors are as important as biomedical factors. Well-trained Family Physicians must be able to communicate well and wisely, use the doctor-patient relationship in therapeutic ways and understand the overall context of their patients’ lives and the health needs of the communities they serve.
