4th Year Medical Student Rotations

Accredited/Visiting Student Information

Note for 2023-2024 Academic Year: Please refer to this link for information on our institution policy.

Students attending schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) should apply through the AAMC Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) program. They are eligible to apply to take 4-week senior electives through the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Long School of Medicine (UT HSC Long SOM) and its affiliated hospitals. Applicants must be senior medical students (MS4) who are in good academic standing. They must also submit required documentation through VSAS. The MS4 rotation for visiting fourth year medical students is offered through the VSLO website and NRSR 4010 Neurosurgery Elective enrollment. **Rotations are not accepted during November – May.

This sub-internship is designed to prepare students for the intense responsibilities that they will would need to undertake while assuming the intern role. The sub-intern is an integral team member who will participate in all team activities and medical care for their patients under the supervision of the neurosurgical attending physician.

Visiting medical students will rotate through University Hospital and St. Luke’s Baptist.

Scrubs and white coats are required in clinical settings as well as the appropriate identification badge specific to the hospital where the student’s rotation is taking place.

We look forward to you rotating with us and hope you will consider us for your residency.

Please reach out to our coordinator using the contact form at the bottom of this page if you have any questions or concerns.

NRSR 4010 – Neurosurgery Elective (Course Description)

Students will have in-depth exposure to the neurosurgery service by following patients in the outpatient clinics, the emergency department, the intensive care unit, and the general wards under the direct supervision of faculty and residents. This rotation will allow the student to actively participate in the management of neurosurgical patients by obtaining patient histories, performing physical examinations, and keeping daily records.  Students will present cases and take calls as designated by the neurosurgery services. They will also participate in the pre/post-operative care and admittance/discharge of neurosurgery patients. The course will include experience performing a focused neuro-examination on brain/spinal cord injuries. Students must attend all conferences and are encouraged to participate in basic/clinical science research projects with neurosurgical faculty.

AAMC Guidance

The following guidance was developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) in response to inquiries about residency interviews. Because students rely on predictable, common practices across schools and programs as they prepare to transition to residency, this guidance will reduce unnecessary confusion, stress, and inequity among students while promoting a more successful residency selection process for all.
