Fellowship
Overview
San Antonio is among the most rapidly growing cities in the US, and UT Health San Antonio is the leading research institution in South Texas. With our proximity to the U.S./Mexico border, fellows have opportunities to treat children with illnesses they might not see elsewhere. Our endocrine clinics are busy with 15 to 20 half day sessions weekly supervised and run by UT Health San Antonio faculty at both the Texas Diabetes Institute and University Hospital clinic site. While on clinical service months, each fellow attends a continuity clinic and several clinics each week with nurses, diabetes educators, nutritionists, social workers, and counselors in place. In addition to clinical service, fellows attend regularly scheduled didactic sessions with weekly Pediatric Grand Rounds, Endocrine Case Conferences, Adult Endocrine Grand Rounds, and Diabetes Journal Club. Fellows join the Adult Endocrine and Reproductive Endocrine fellows for shared lectures and also attend a common fellowship core curriculum twice monthly.
Divisional faculty are heavily involved in research in both endocrinology and diabetes. We have incredible resources and active ongoing projects as outlined on our website. There are many potential collaborative research projects under the mentorship of Dr. Ralph DeFranzo, genetics (Chromosome 18 Research Center), pulmonology (cystic fibrosis), and the Texas Biomedical Research Institute. There are several additional endocrine clinic rotation options with expertise in osteoporosis, genetics, adult reproductive endocrine, adult diabetes and thyroid clinics, and border medicine research. Each summer, fellows, residents, and staff volunteer at Camp Independence as medical counselors to gain expertise in the real-life management of diabetes in children of all ages.
