Welcome to the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine at UT San Antonio

The Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine provides care for hospitalized children in a variety of settings including the general inpatient wards, newborn nursery, and pediatric procedure services. We offer expertise in the care of common pediatric diseases as well as complex and technology-dependent children who require hospitalization and collaborate with subspecialty and surgical colleagues to provide consultative and co-management services. Our division also provides care to children requiring moderate sedation for painful or prolonged procedures through a hospitalist-led procedural sedation service which has been designated as a Center of Excellence by the Society for Pediatric Sedation.

Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine members are not only practicing hospitalists, but are premier academic physicians researching, publishing, and educating at the forefront of the emerging field of pediatric hospital medicine. All faculty members are board certified in General Pediatrics with the majority of our faculty also board certified or board eligible in Pediatric Hospital Medicine.

Members of the division have ongoing clinical research efforts in the area of pediatric respiratory diseases and contribute to the development of evidence-based practice algorithms for children’s health in our community. The division is also actively involved in educational research on innovations in student, resident, and fellow education. Pediatric division members have been published and reviewed for widely read pediatric journals including Pediatrics, Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine and the Journal of Pediatrics, Hospital Pediatrics, and Pediatric Annals and have submitted award-winning scholarly projects to national organizations.

We are actively and formally engaged in leadership roles in the Long School of Medicine Undergraduate and Graduation Medical Education, the Pediatric Residency Training Program, and the Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship Program.

The Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine has an exceptional commitment to quality improvement work with our partner hospitals.  A majority of division members are graduates of the UT System Clinical Safety and Effectiveness Program and have helped expand the quality improvement efforts of the department at large. Division faculty remain actively engaged in quality improvement efforts at University Health Women’s and Children’s Hospital, UT San Antonio, and nationally. Division-sponsored projects have won two coveted Touchstone Awards for quality from the national CHRISTUS healthcare organization, as well as a UT System Patient Safety Committee Grant.
