Thank a Resident Day (2020)

Fourth year medical students from the Gold Humanism Honor Society at UT Health San Antonio celebrated “Thank A Resident Day” this past Friday (February 28, 2020). These medical students traveled to different departments delivering gift bags, doughnuts, snacks, and drinks. They definitely brought a smile to the faces of our hardworking residents!
Cadaver Lab

In our most recent cadaver lab, residents learned how to perform a minimally invasive spine fusion technique called an XLIF (Extreme Lateral Interbody Fusion) by NuVasive. The residents are using the ORBEYE, a high definition 3D exoscope that aids surgeons in microsurgical technique.

Our residents recently explored various surgical approaches to the third ventricle during a cadaver lab. Dr. John Floyd, chairman, highlighted interhemispheric approaches, including transcallosal, transforaminal, and interfornicial nuances. The residents were able to practice these techniques in our lab with cadavers provided by Stryker.

The Department of Neurosurgery recently celebrated the graduation of Grant Booher, M.D., Ian McDougall, M.D., and Vaibhav Patel, M.D. During the ceremony, our faculty and staff had the opportunity to recognize the contributions these graduates made to our department during their residency. Resident Paper Competition Success

Congratulations to Dr. Clay Samples for his success earlier this month at the annual meeting of the J. Bradley Aust Surgical Society. Dr. Samples won third place in the Resident Paper Competition for his article entitled “Role of Follow-up CT Scans in the Management of Traumatic Pediatric Epidural Hematomas.”
